The aim of the European Exchange format is to allow citizens to securely access and share (e.g. with doctors or pharmacies) their health data anywhere in the European Union.

The European Commission (EC) has recently adopted a Recommendation on a European Electronic Health Record exchange format. This recommendation consists of a set of common technical specifications for the transfer of health data in chosen health information domains such as Patient Summaries and ePrescriptions, but also laboratory test, images and hospital discharge reports and the further elaboration of the exchange format through a joint coordination process.
